Is Your HVAC Struggling? Here’s How to Tell

December 5, 2023

Your HVAC system is responsible for heating and cooling your home. So, it's important to keep it functioning properly to keep your home comfortable. If you believe your HVAC system is struggling, there are a few things to look for. Here are four that shouldn't be ignored.

Age

Are you aware of how old your HVAC system is? If so, you should look into it, as you don't want to deal with an old unit that can clunk out at any minute. According to Bob Vila, most HVAC systems can last between 15 and 25 years. Pay attention to when your unit is nearing the end of its life span. After all, it's a good idea to replace it instead of waiting for it to completely stop or slow down.

Noises

When you turn on your unit, you shouldn't hear anything above a slight humming noise. However, if your AC is so noisy that you can barely have a conversation when it's on, that's a sign of a larger problem. A loud unit could mean that there may be an issue with the motor or it could mean it's at the end of its life cycle.

Smells

You should feel your AC, not smell it. So, if nasty odors are coming from your unit, it's a sign that HVAC services must clean or replace the ducts or change the filter. A typical AC unit filter needs changing at least every few months, according to This Old House. However, if you live in an area that's very dusty or has a high level of pollution, you may need to change your filter more frequently.

Poor Circulation

When you turn your unit on, can you feel it in any spot in your home? If so, that's a good sign of a functioning HVAC system. However, if you have to stand practically underneath the unit to feel heated or cooled air, it's time to call local HVAC services to take a look. A functioning unit should efficiently circulate air throughout your residential space.

As you can see, there are several ways your HVAC may be struggling. If you're experiencing any of the above issues, you should call your local HVAC services. Our trained professionals at Mountain City Service can come out and get to the root of the problem. Contact us today to request a service.
